Pak’nSave is well-known for its “cut price” television and print advertisements, which feature a stick figure entitled “Stickman” in black on a yellow background. The television commercials are narrated by comedian Paul Ego. Stickman’s original voice was Ego “mucking around”. Another voice had been recorded, but the “mucking around” one was picked.
In 2013, the Commerce Commission stated that Pak’nSave’s comparison pricing marketing could be misleading in some instances. Progressive Enterprises, the company that owned Countdown, filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in 2018 regarding a Pak’nSave advertising. It compared the pricing at Pak’nSave and Countdown.
Progressive claimed that the advertisement was misleading because no store offered the same prices on the day specified in the campaign. Foodstuffs stated that the date was incorrect, and that the correct date was September 28, 2017, not August 7, 2017. The same year, vegans complained to the Advertising Standards Authority that an advertisement stating “you’ll never beat real meat” was disrespectful to the vegan and vegetarian communities. The ASA dismissed the complaint. In 2018, the Human Rights Commission criticised a Pak’nSave advertisement urging responsible drinking as “discriminatory and harmful”.
It portrayed men costumed as women buying wine, prompting human rights groups to label the advertisement as “transphobic”.
Stickman’s Instagram account was started in April 2020, during the COVID-19 epidemic. His first post read, “Day 1 on Instagram and Day 23 in Lockdown.” My bubble still looks fresh.
